Kennesaw State University hosted its annual MLK Legacy Breakfast at Vystar Arena to honor the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event brought together university leaders, students, faculty, staff, and community members to reflect on King’s influence and discuss the ongoing responsibility to uphold his values.
The program opened with a performance by KSU Colors, a student organization, and included readings from King’s 1965 speech “Our God is Marching On.” Student Government Association President Allisa George welcomed attendees.
KSU President Kathy S. Schwaig addressed the audience, stating, “Each year, we gather not only to honor Dr. King, but to commit ourselves anew to carry forward his work—together . His vision was never for one person or one community alone, but for all of us to be united in purpose.”
Mark Wilson, founder and CEO of Infrastructure Growth Partners (IGP) and a member of the KSU Foundation Board of Trustees, delivered the keynote address. He spoke about individual choices and collective responsibility: “Every opportunity I’ve ever been given came with an obligation to help someone else rise,” Wilson said. “When we understand that our success is tied to the success of others, we begin to build stronger communities together.”
The ceremony ended with a performance by KSU’s Black Musicians Coalition and a tribute video honoring King’s legacy.
The breakfast served as the main event in Kennesaw State’s annual activities recognizing Dr. King. The university has held programs each year since the federal holiday was first observed in 1986 to commemorate King’s leadership during the civil rights movement.
Throughout the morning, attendees discussed how leadership extends beyond titles and positions into everyday actions within their communities.
