Canton and Suwanee have been recognized as Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) communities by the Georgia Main Street Program, which operates under the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. This designation is given to cities that have demonstrated strong performance in revitalizing their downtown areas, supporting economic development, and encouraging community innovation.

The GEMS program acknowledges cities that successfully apply the Main Street Approach. Canton and Suwanee were selected for their achievements in maintaining local character while promoting economic growth. The recognition places them among a select group of cities known for their active downtowns that function as economic and cultural centers.

Suwanee has been recognized for its dynamic public spaces and forward-thinking planning efforts. Canton has been noted for progress in small business development, organizing community events, and creating a sense of place for residents and visitors. Their selection for the GEMS program highlights their leadership in developing resilient downtowns.

“These cities have shown what’s possible when local leadership, community engagement, and strategic planning come together,” said Cherie Bennett, Director of the Office of Downtown Development at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. “We are proud to welcome Canton and Suwanee into the GEMS family and look forward to the continued impact they will make across the state.”

GEMS communities are considered leading examples for other Georgia cities interested in improving their downtown areas through preservation-focused economic development. These cities meet high performance standards and contribute to the ongoing success of the Main Street initiative.
